Mandatory fields in a GST tax invoice

GST rules (CGST Rules, Rule 46) say a tax invoice must show:

  • Supplier's name, address and GSTIN
  • A unique, consecutive invoice number and the date of issue
  • Customer's name, address and GSTIN (if registered)
  • Place of supply and the state code — this decides CGST+SGST or IGST
  • HSN code for goods or SAC code for services
  • Description, quantity, unit and taxable value of each item
  • Tax rate and amount: CGST and SGST for the same state, IGST for another state
  • Total amount, amount in words and whether tax is payable on reverse charge
  • Signature or digital signature of the supplier

Trinevia Billing prints all of these by default. The fields you don't need (PO number, vehicle number, e-way bill) can be switched off.

CGST + SGST or IGST?

If your customer is in the same state as you, GST is split in half: for example 18% becomes 9% CGST and 9% SGST. If the customer is in another state (or union territory), the whole 18% is charged as IGST.

You never have to work this out yourself. Pick the customer's state and the bill switches to the right split automatically; the first two digits of the GSTIN are the state code.

How to make a GST invoice online in 3 steps

1. Customer — type the customer's name (and GSTIN or address if you want them printed). Pick their state and the tax type is set for you.

2. Items — add what you sold with quantity and price. GST and totals are worked out automatically.

3. Download & Share — click Download PDF, print it, or share it straight to WhatsApp from your phone.

Your own business details, logo, bank details and signature are entered once and reused on every bill.

GST invoice vs bill of supply

A tax invoice is issued by a regular GST-registered seller and shows tax. A bill of supply is issued when no GST is charged — by composition-scheme dealers or for exempt goods and services. Both are available here; see the bill of supply generator.

Frequently asked questions

Is this GST invoice format valid in India?

It contains every field required by Rule 46 of the CGST Rules. Please keep your own numbering series and confirm rates with your accountant — the tool helps you prepare bills; it does not certify tax compliance.

Does it handle HSN and SAC codes?

Yes. Type the HSN (goods) or SAC (services) code against each item and it is printed in the item table.

Can I print Original, Duplicate and Triplicate copies?

Yes. In Settings tick the copies you need and they print as separate sets with the right label.

Is the amount in words included?

Yes, in the Indian lakh/crore system, for example 'One Lakh Twenty Thousand Rupees Only'.
