Why write the amount in words?
Writing the total in words makes it harder to change a number later, and avoids mistakes when someone reads the figures. That is why banks ask for it on cheques, and why GST tax invoices in India usually show the invoice total in words under the amount.
The words follow the number system of the currency you pick. For Indian Rupees, 1,50,00,000 is "One Crore Fifty Lakh". For US Dollars, 15,000,000 is "Fifteen Million".

How do I write an amount in words on a cheque in India?+
Write the currency first and end with "Only", for example "Rupees One Lakh Twenty Five Thousand Only". Use the cheque style result above and copy it exactly.
What is the difference between lakh/crore and million?+
India groups digits as 1,00,000 (one lakh) and 1,00,00,000 (one crore). Most other countries group them as 100,000 (one hundred thousand) and 10,000,000 (ten million). Pick Indian Rupee for lakh and crore, or another currency for million and billion.
How are paise written in words?+
After the rupees, add "and" with the paise in words, for example 1,250.50 is "One Thousand Two Hundred Fifty Rupees and Fifty Paise Only".
